I added a "WORK" label onto the pocket and a one-liner to make it easy for everyone to understand the purpose. Pretty much all of the "stuff" that we get in the course of a day or comes from the office goes home in this pocket. Parents sort through and take it out daily or regularly. The purpose of the front pocket is to organize daily papers to take home.

At the beginning of the year, I would do binder checks every few days to get them in the habit of cleaning them out. After that, I would just do a binder check once a week. A binder check was just, “put your binder on your desk so we can check that it is cleaned out.” Nothing fancy and it took just a minute or two to do.

After re-printing the entire binder for my whole class, replacing the page protectors, and almost crying from exhaustion and defeat, I had my first set of Take Home Binders.
